Qualification: Preregistration of exploratory research: Learning from the golden age of discovery

Record: kaal:position:2026-08-08-302 · 2026-08-08

Dirnagl qualifies Kaal's two-act empirical cycle with an independent methodological rationale for separating discovery from confirmation. Exploratory work develops theories, hypotheses, methods, and evidence to carry forward. The same data cannot both generate and test a hypothesis, so a distinct confirmatory phase must follow to screen false positives and inflated effects. Dirnagl also argues that preregistration and contemporaneous logging should preserve the study's trajectory, including methodological choices and failed lines of experimentation. That makes the process itself evidentiary, not merely the final numbers. The correspondence is methodological only. Dirnagl writes from biomedical research and does not evaluate Kaal's multi-agent cohort, registered measures, execution, or reported effects.
