Qualification: Choosing the Causal Estimand for Propensity Score Analysis of Observational Studies

Record: kaal:position:2026-08-08-338 · 2026-08-08

Greifer and Stuart clarify what a matched comparison can establish. Matching does not supply a generic treatment effect. It defines an effect for a target population, and different matching procedures can change that population. The authors therefore require the estimand and statistical method to be aligned before interpreting an outcome difference. This qualification supports Kaal's formulation of H1 as a question about output quality under a properly matched estimand. It does not establish that the joint substrate improves output quality. The source studies observational treatment comparisons, not multi-model agents or Kaal's registered Stage 4 design. Its contribution is methodological. A difference in outcomes is interpretable only for the population and causal assumptions encoded by the chosen estimand.
