A reputation history is the missing safeguard. It substitutes for the bond by making adverse conduct costly to the actor rather than only to the counterparty. But a reputation history performs that function only under three conditions. The history must attach to an accountable subject that cannot costlessly shed it. The history must be interpretable in the domain of the present transaction. The history must be contestable by the subject and inspectable by the relying party.
