Qualification: Group discussion improves lie detection

Record: kaal:position:2026-08-08-304 · 2026-08-08

Klein and Epley qualify Kaal's exploratory over-approval result with four experiments on human lie detection. Three-person groups that discussed their judgments distinguished truths from lies more accurately than individuals. The gain came primarily from identifying lies correctly, not from improved truth detection or a change in the tendency to answer 'lie.' Statistical aggregation of individual answers did not reproduce the effect. The source therefore supports a narrow mechanism correspondence: discussion can reduce acceptance of false content through information created in interaction. The comparison remains limited. The experiments concern human judgments about deceptive statements. They do not test multi-model validation pools, ground-truth work approval, unanimity, or Kaal's reported effect sizes.
